The Role of a Postpartum Attendant: Real Support When You Need It Most

If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve just had a baby—or you’re about to. Either way, welcome to one of the most transformative and sometimes overwhelming seasons of your life. It’s all exciting and beautiful, but—postpartum is not always a walk in the park. Whether it’s your first time around the block or your fifth, the reality of healing, adjusting to your new baby, and managing your business (because yes, you’re still an entrepreneur, too) can be a lot to juggle. That’s where I come in.

I’m Indigo, a spiritual postpartum attendant. Most people recognize the term doula (love-hate relationship with this word, what I do is different and I need you to understand this), and I’m here to help you through the real stuff that no one really talks about in those “What to Expect” books. You know, the things that go beyond “sleep when the baby sleeps” and more into what your body, mind, and soul actually need during this time (because what happens when the baby doesn’t sleep, you’re officially chopped and screwed.) I’m here to make sure you not only survive the postpartum period, but thrive through it.

The Postpartum Struggle

We all know that feeling when you’re about to give birth—there’s this sense of surrealness, anticipation, and sometimes even a little anxiety. But once your baby is born? It’s like you drop into the most vivid experience you could never fully prepare for–even if you’ve had a few tries at it.

You probably thought that once the baby came out, the hard part was over. But if we’re being honest, postpartum is where a lot of the emotional and physical stuff kicks in. The sleepless nights, the breastfeeding challenges, that awkward belly pooch that doesn’t seem to go anywhere. Then there’s the balancing act of keeping your business afloat while adjusting to this new reality of motherhood. It can be overwhelming. And if you don’t have the right support, it’s easy to feel like you’re drowning in the demands of it all.

This is why postpartum support like me exist. I’m not here to just check off a list of “to-dos” for you. I’m here to provide a holistic approach to your healing—body, mind, and spirit. So, let’s break it down.

The History and Importance of Postpartum Care

First things first—let’s talk about why postpartum care is so important. Traditionally, women around the world were never expected to go through childbirth AND recovery on their own. In many cultures, there were specific practices and rituals designed to help a woman heal physically, emotionally, and spiritually after giving birth. It wasn’t just about “getting your body back” or “getting through the sleepless nights.” It was about honoring the FULL transition that birth brings—healing the body, restoring the spirit, and reconnecting with your purpose as a mother which is the first few years.

Unfortunately, we’ve moved away from that kind of care in many places. Modern medicine is wonderful in many ways, but it doesn’t always address the full spectrum of what a new mom needs. Postpartum care is often overlooked or left until “whenever you get around to it,” which isn’t helpful when you’re trying to heal and adjust to life with a newborn. That’s why I’m here: to provide you with the support that goes beyond the basics of baby care and into what you truly need to feel restored and empowered.

What Does a Postpartum Attendant Actually Do?

So, what exactly does a postpartum attendant like me do? Here’s a rundown support can show up for you during this time:

Physical Healing Support: Your body just did something incredible, but it also needs time to heal. Whether you had a vaginal birth or a C-section, the physical recovery process can be intense or exhausting, especially the first few weeks. I help you navigate the healing process with practical tips and hands-on support, from perineal care to belly-binding techniques that promote healing. And if you’re struggling with breastfeeding, I can help with that too.

Emotional Support: Postpartum is a rollercoaster of emotions. One minute you’re filled with love for your baby, and the next, you’re crying because the laundry isn’t folded. I’m here to help you process everything that’s going on emotionally. I offer a safe space for you to talk through the highs and lows, help you work through any birth trauma, and remind you that it’s okay to not have everything figured out. And yes, I help fold the laundry too ;)

Spiritual Guidance: You’ve just experienced a major life shift, and with that comes a need for spiritual support. Whether you’ve got a spiritual practice you lean into or you’re looking to explore it, I’ll help guide you in reconnecting with yourself and your baby. Birth is a rite of passage, and I’m here to help you honor that sacred space.

Practical Help Around the House: Let’s face it--as a new mom, you’re going to be exhausted, especially if you have other children to look after. And as a business owner, you might not have the time to tackle your to-do list. This is where I come in to help with and to help you manage some of the day-to-day tasks—by meal prepping, light cleaning, or tending to your other children—so you can focus on resting and healing.

Support for Your Business: You’re not just a mom, you’re also a business owner. And I know how hard it can be to keep everything afloat when you’re in recovery mode. I’ll help you navigate balancing work and motherhood, provide tips on time management, and offer any extra hands you might need when it comes to small (and I do mean small) business tasks. I’m all about helping you maintain your entrepreneurial spirit while making sure you don’t burn out in the process. But remember, my true role is supporting YOU not becoming an admin assistant.

Why Postpartum Care is Essential

Postpartum is an extended time for deep healing, both physically and emotionally. Without proper support, you could end up dealing with long-term issues—physically (think pelvic floor problems, back pain, or breastfeeding struggles) and emotionally (hello, baby blues and postpartum depression).

When you have someone like me by your side, you’re not just getting someone to help around the house. You’re getting a partner who understands the complexities of this time, who knows what it’s like to navigate postpartum as a "doula", entrepreneur AND mom, and who is committed to making sure you heal holistically.

Taking the time to invest in your postpartum care is one of the best things you can do—for your health, your family, and your business.
