How to Eat for Energy: A Postpartum Attendant's Guide to Nutrition (Chef's Edition!)

Postpartum nutrition is about more than just surviving those sleepless nights. Your body has undergone one of the most intense experiences imaginable—creating and birthing life—and now it needs intentional care to recover and restore. But let’s start with a truth bomb: your digestion postpartum is not what it used to be, and that’s not your fault. It's due to changes of hormones and biology.

During pregnancy, hormones like progesterone and relaxin slow down digestion to make space for your growing baby & this also happens as you are preparing to birth. This was a brilliant survival mechanism, ensuring your body could extract every ounce of nutrients for the little one & reserve vital energy to push, contract, & get your baby out. However, postpartum, that same slowdown can leave you feeling bloated, constipated, and sluggish if you’re not mindful about what and how you eat.

After birth, your body prioritizes healing the uterus, supporting milk production, and regulating blood flow to vital organs, which means digestion takes a backseat. Stress, fatigue, and elevated cortisol levels only add to the mix, making your gut work harder than it needs to. And I want to address early that while the focus of this article may not focus on it as in depth & specifically, that it IS POSSIBLE to be pregnant AND postpartum & thrive on a plant-based diet. You would simply require the same nutrients, minerals, vitamins, etc. but derive them from plants, herbs, teas, broths, etc. There is a space for everyone to thrive according to their needs, but I am going to primarily address the omnivores in the room.

This slower digestion, while helpful during pregnancy, can be a real hurdle postpartum. If you don’t nourish yourself properly during this critical period, the risks are significant. Poor nutrition can delay healing, sap your energy, throw your hormones further off balance, and even weaken your immune system. And let’s not forget, postpartum isn’t just the first six weeks after giving birth—it’s anytime after your baby is born. Whether you’re a few months or even years postpartum, your body still benefits from proper nourishment.

So, how do you heal your digestion and give your body the support it needs to thrive? Start simple and work your way up. In the early postpartum days, focus on liquids and broths. Bone broths are particularly powerful because they’re rich in collagen, gelatin, and essential minerals that promote gut healing and tissue repair. Herbal teas like ginger and fennel can help reduce bloating and soothe your digestive system while keeping you hydrated. Warm water with a splash of lemon or coconut water is an easy way to replenish electrolytes, especially if you’re breastfeeding.

  • As your digestion starts to normalize, gradually introduce warm, cooked foods. These meals are easier to break down and absorb, giving your body the nutrients it needs without overloading your gut. Think oatmeal, congee, stews, curries, and soups filled with softly cooked root vegetables, protein, and warming spices like turmeric and cinnamon.

  • Healthy fats like nuts, avocado, olive oil, and ghee are also excellent for hormone production and energy, while soft-cooked proteins such as chicken or eggs provide the building blocks for healing tissues and restoring strength.

  • It’s also important to eat at the right times for your recovery. In the first few days postpartum, stick to broths and liquids as your digestive system resets. As your body heals, pay attention to its signals. If you feel bloated or uncomfortable, stick with lighter meals. If your energy is lagging, prioritize protein and complex carbohydrates. Batch-cook soups, stews, and curries ahead of time. Freeze them in portions so you always have something warm and nourishing on hand. Keep snacks like boiled eggs, trail mix, and fresh fruit within reach for quick energy.

  • And remember, hydration is as important as the food you eat. Your body is working overtime, and staying hydrated supports every function, from milk production to cellular repair. Water with a splash of lemon & a pinch of sea salt, watermelon juice (my personal favorite), or coconut water replenishes electrolytes, especially if you’re breastfeeding. Herbal teas like ginger (soothes digestion) and fennel (reduces bloating) are amazing postpartum allies, it also helps with milk production but in the beginning you don't need too much of this... You do not want to over produce milk because it can results in painful, swollen & tender breasts. The first few days your milk is shifting from colostrum to a more complex form of breastmilk but that's another blog.

These principles aren’t new—they’re rooted in wisdom from cultures around the world. Ayurveda, for example, emphasizes warm, grounding foods to balance the vata (atmosphere/air/space/lightness) energy heightened during postpartum. This aligns with traditions like La Cuarentena in Latinx cultures, where new moms are lovingly fed nutrient-rich, warm meals to aid in healing and bonding with their babies. African traditions also prioritize hot meals and herbal teas, understanding that warmth encourages circulation and energy flow, both essential for recovery.

I know there’s a lot of pressure on postpartum bodies. We’re constantly bombarded with “get your body back” messages that suggest you should be focusing on losing the baby weight or reshaping your body in some way. But let me say this loud and clear: health should always come before aesthetics. The postpartum period is a time of healing, not a time for extreme diets or punishing exercise routines. Focus on nurturing your body, strengthening your mind, and creating a strong foundation for motherhood. Your body has just done something incredible. Now it’s time to show it love and care by feeding it well and giving it the nutrition it needs to thrive.

Freshly prepared meals hold an extra layer of magic. Food is no longer just fuel but a form of care, community, and connection.
